Cremation: How to Ensure Your Wishes Are Honored

Following your death, one of the many decisions your loved ones may face is what to do with your remains. Often, cremation is a more cost effective option. Planning for cremation in advance of your passing can alleviate the burden on your family of guessing how much to spend or what you would have wanted. If you wish to be cremated, it is important to take certain steps to guarantee compliance with your wishes.

A Cremation Directive is a notarized document evidencing one’s desire to be cremated after their passing. Depending on the circumstances, it may be in one’s best interest to execute and sign multiple original copies of your Cremation Directive to ensure that all necessary parties have advance notice of your wishes. Once you have chosen a funeral home to handle your services, it is advisable that you provide them with an original copy of your Cremation Directive. You may also want to store an original copy of this directive with your Last Will and Testament so that the Executor of your Will can help ensure your wishes are carried out. In addition, if you reside in a nursing home or retirement community, you may wish to provide that facility with a copy of this directive.
