It’s always a good idea to check with a lawyer before making an important decision concerning your property or rights – whether buying a house or selling a business.
When working with a lawyer, remember these tips:
- Ask about Fees and Costs. Get this in writing. Don’t be afraid to ask what work the lawyer will be providing and what staff will also be working on your matter.
- Remember your Rights. You don’t have to hire the first attorney you sit with. You should be comfortable with your attorney.
- Be Prepared. The cost to handle your matter will vary greatly on how organized and prepared you are. Don’t show up to your lawyer’s office unprepared, it will cost you. Bring all the necessary paperwork related to your matter and bring a written history or notes about the case. Also, prepare specific questions you want the lawyer to answer.
- Keep your Records. Always keep copies of documents your lawyer gave you and that you provided to your lawyer. Never rely on anyone else to do this for you. Keep all these in a safe place.
