What Exactly is a Notary Public

In Louisiana, a Notary Public is an important part of the legal system. With our laws based on the Civil Law, notaries in Louisiana don’t just verify signatures; they draft Wills, Powers of Attorney, Affidavits, LLC documents and more.

You can become a Louisiana Notary Public by taking a statewide notary test, often called the “mini-bar exam,” or by passing the bar exam to become a lawyer. In both cases, you must register with the Secretary of State and be issued a unique notary ID number. Lawyers do not automatically become notaries. They too must register with the Secretary of State.

Notaries must stand behind their work and every seal they create for the rest of their lives. Louisiana also requires that notaries carry error and omission insurance, a surety bond, or both. You can check out the official database of all Louisiana notaries here.

Because this process is so different than other states and because of the great powers given to notaries in Louisiana, things work a little differently here. In most states, notaries can be found in banks and post offices. Here, notaries are more likely to be found in law firms and stand-alone notary offices.
