Transferring a car to a buyer and giving it to a family member require different paperwork. Start by identifying whether the transaction is a sale or a donation, then review the title before anyone signs.
When you sell a vehicle
The title assignment identifies the seller, buyer, vehicle, and transfer. Check that the seller matches the owner on the current title and that the vehicle identification number (VIN) is correct. Record the actual sale price and complete any required odometer disclosure.
Under the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) checklist, a separate bill of sale is not required when the selling price appears on the title assignment. Notarization requirements depend on the documents and circumstances. Do not sign a blank assignment or assume that every out-of-state title follows the same rules.
When you donate a vehicle
A gift should be documented as a donation rather than a sale for an invented price. OMV requires a notarized act of donation. Call before visiting so we can confirm the document, required signers, and identification for your transaction.
Check liens and ownership issues first
If a lender is listed on the title, bring the proper lien release or financing documents. A lost title, deceased owner, business-owned vehicle, or transfer through someone acting under a power of attorney may require additional documents. Tell us about those facts before your appointment.
What to bring
The current original title and any existing bill of sale or act of donation.
Current photo identification and the names and addresses of the parties.
The sale price, VIN, mileage, and applicable lien documents.
Proof of liability insurance if applying for a license plate, subject to OMV exceptions.
